Studio Brief 4 - Experimental Jetset

Statement and Counter Statement : Notes on Experimental Jetset

Experimental Jetset's 'Statement and Counter - statement' is an archive of previous work. The design is loosely organised with photographic chapters showing examples of their work. The images within the book were created using a scanner which enabled them to capture snippets of the designs at actual size.

The use of the scanner to create the book is an interesting technique and takes existing work and represents it in a new way. The images are at actual size so when fitted to the small format the images look quite abstract, becoming something new and different from the original work.

The stock used within the book is quite thin creating an interesting texture and a sense of delicacy, making the reader be careful with the book creating a sense of value. This however is contradicted with the use of the such a cheap material making the design quite inexpensive.

On the scanned pages gaps are left between images and the spine creating space between the two halves of the spread, which allows the two pages to function as separate images.

Using the scanner to reproduce the images creates a consitent quality through out the book. The use of black and white imagery combined with colour works well, with the colour subtly breaking up the black and white.

Automatically arranged alphabets

Automatically arranged alphabets is another publication by Experimental Jetset. The zine uses typographic experiments generated with a piece of software. The arrangement of the letterforms creates a sense of increasing compactness as all the letters are crammed within the page. The use of a sans serif typeface allows the letters to be closely compacted creating a sense they are objects within a space stacked on top of one another.
