Digital Initial Ideas - Imagery
Using some of the initial ideas I created earlier these were then digitalised to allow the group to visualise the ideas better.
The first idea showed the balls within a moving space, it was suggested that this was an interesting concept and would work well animated. It was also said that potentially this could be made into a three dimensional object, although there were reservations as to how this would work as an identity.
The design using the axis lines from the geometry diagram was shown through the use of different thicknesses of lines. This design would shift between positions as the axis' moved along each other in different ways. The starting diagram would have the front two axis as thicker lines with the third axis being thinner because of it perspective and direction away from the other axis.
Another design used the axis idea, however this time used coloured points at the end of each axis, creating atom like structures. It was said that perhaps the coloured dots could correspond to the CMYK colours making reference to the print process. The idea of the design would be that they morph between different points, lines and shapes. This idea would also be effective as a wayfinding solution because of its flexibility. However it was said that potentially the design looks too scientific and has to many associations with atoms for it to be used for a print based exhibition.
The final design looked at cubes as space taking influence from the diagrams we had looked at during the geometry research. Creating closed boxes, see through boxes and open boxes began to explore how space could be visualised through a shape.
Using the cube as a basis for the design we considered how within space there are various points which can be linked to create connections. We used one box as a way of creating a space and created lines between a series of points within the cube space. This created the impression of a network of connecting points that are all in some way tied together. It also created the impression of a pathway through a space and that this could potentially reflect the city space as a whole. However when the design was digitalised it was found that the lines within the box looked messy and not though out in comparison to the cleanness of the outer cube.
Another concept for the cubes would be to make images out them representing ways of moving through and connecting space. Stairs could be created to connect two areas, tunnels could be made to go underneath space etc. We considered that perhaps these could also reflect places within Leeds to make a connection to the city.
Going back to the design exploring the different types of boxes I suggested that these could represent different types of space, full, empty and available as described in the definition of space. Using the isometric paper allowed for further designs to be considered with the cubes. Like in the previous idea I considered stacking the cubes in different formations using only the three types of blocks. When the individual cubes were digitalised the colour scheme of Leeds (blue, white, yellow) was used on the different sides of the blocks, however this wasn't very effective for the empty block which had no faces to apply the colour to. Instead each of the blocks were filled with a separate colour with the empty one being white, full one being blue and available being yellow. The cubes however did not stand out enough so the blocks were altered so that the outlines were thicker giving the shapes more substance. These three cubes were used within the crit.
