Concept Ideas
Focus on Process
This idea would be centered around the traditional physical processes that make up the prints within the exhibition. Processes such as screen printing, monoprinting etc would be used to create the prints. It was though that the role of the makers mark could be looked into and how the maker leaves something behind within their work when using traditional techniques making every piece unique because of flaws or nuances in the designs. Another thought would be exploring the equipment that is used within the different processes such as rollers, screens, paint brushes etc. The idea would be to look at the unique marks that these create such as roller marks or brush strokes. Another idea would be to photograph these in different ways allowing insight into the tools and creative process of making the prints.
Focus on History
The events that would be brought together in the exhibition would be a mix of both past and present events which will have taken place within a large time scale. Thinking about this idea led to us to a historical point of view and how there are still traces of the events in one form or another despite many of the events not existing anymore. Definitions that were found were 'find or discover by investigation', 'follow or mark the course or position of , with ones eye, mind or finger' and 'a mark, object, or other indication of the existence or passing of something'.
Focus on Community
This idea would look at how people come together during events and how the works would all be brought together. The exhibition itself would be a social event and would be representing the community of Leeds, whilst bringing together creative and like minded people. Definitions found relating to community included 'a community - a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common'. The concept would focus on the links between people and the networks between them.
Focus on Space
Another idea was to look at the idea of the spaces themselves. The initial brief had a line within it which said 'The uses and abuses of public spaces do much to communicate the identity and character of the city' which prompted the idea of looking into public areas and their roles as spaces themselves. From this we looked at how spaces could be used or interacted with such as filling, occupying , linking, overlapping and expanding space. Words such as area, capacity, zone and field were all associated with this idea of space. Definitions of space that were found included 'leaving something out' , 'position or distance from one another' , ' the dimensions of height, depth and width which all things exist and move' and 'a continuous area or expanse which is free, available or unoccupied' . The definitions of height depth and width led us to think about how space could be portrayed three dimensionally, whilst the definition which talked about free, available and unoccupied space led us to think about how spaces could be represented in terms of their status.
Concept to continue with
We decided to go with the concept which looked at space as we felt that this was the most original idea and would look at the brief in a different perspective to many of the other groups. We also thought that the idea of space could be interpreted in different ways allowing for a greater variety of possible visuals.
