Studio Brief 3 - Branding Research - The Jewish Museum

The Jewish Museum - Rebrand by Sagmeister and Walsh

The Jewish Museum allows access to Jewish art and culture for all backgrounds. It is situated on New York City's Museum Mile and was founded in 1904. It was one of the first institutions of its kind in the United States and one of oldest Jewish Museums in the world. The museum has around 30,000 works of art, objects and media allowing insight into Jewish culture over the last 4,000 years. The museums education program, which involves talks, hands on activities and performances is accessible to a wide audience.

The contemporary design is based on sacred geometry from which the Star of David is created from, allowing a connection between the heritage of the faith and modern day design. The whole identity is based around this grid system allowing flexibility across formats, enabling a consistent visual aesthetic. The use of Klein Blue creates impact as well as blue being associated strongly with the Jewish culture, therefore reflecting the faith in a simple way.  The use of blue and white as a colour pallette makes reference to the colour scheme in the Star of David.

Photographs of the collection are also used within the grid system through the use of a custom made app which converts them into new images based on the grid system.
