Cover Mock Ups
Following on from previous designs that took inspiration from the cover design of Nest, different variations have been explored using mock ups with materials.
Using white for the front flap aimed to contrast well against the image letting the image be the focal point. However the white seemed quite clinical in comparison, so it was considered that perhaps another colour could be used that better reflected an element of the picture.
Underneath the flap the swatch was placed next to the image. This allowed the swatch to be hidden when the flap was down allowing the image to be the focus. By placing both the swatch and photograph side by side this allowed comparisons to be made between the two more easily, making it more obvious the colours in the swatch came from the image to its left.
It was considered that the cover could use tones from the image. Picking three swatches that were of a similar tone, these were then placed in blocks next to each other to create almost a gradient around the back and front of the cover . This worked well in linking the cover to the actual image however they were quite blocky rather than a gradual change of tone.
Printing just a singular block colour on water colour like card was experimented with. When printed on, it was found that the colour did not print flatly because of the texture, meaning some areas were still white. It was also found that when this card was used for the cover it was quite stiff meaning that the flap on the front would stick up.
Printing onto acetate meant that the colours used were much subtler. The block colour designs that were used earlier worked more effectively on the acetate because the transition between the colours was more natural. However using acetate in this way would mean that white card would need to be used underneath it to prevent the rest of the design being seen through the cover.
It was also found that when the acetate was cut to mimic the size of the card flap underneath it continued to stick up. In later designs the acetate was kept to be the A5 on front and back allowing it to lie flatter.
Using just one block colour that matched the thickness of the front flap and was the same on the back created symmetry across the front and back. The rest of the design was left as clear acetate which helped to weigh the flap down as well as protect the front image.
