Studio Brief 3 - Initial Design Ideas

Drawings of Initial Ideas

Taking influence from visual and theoretical research into space and its meaning, led to various possible visualisations.

Playing with the concept of height, width and depth the axis diagram was broken down into singular lines which would depict each of the different measurements. Within this design the lines could freely move when animated to flow along each other creating a shifting and evolving design.

The concept of height, width and depth was also explored in a similar way to the initial diagram however points were added to the ends of each line. This gives the design more substance creating a sense of the diagram being a physical object rather than just lines. It was also considered that the design could be animated showing the beginning of things with a singular point within a space all the way through to three dimensional space. The different points and lines could freely transform into different shapes which would therefore be different types of spaces as well.

Another design uses the different stages of dimensions and combines them all into one image. The point, line, plane are all placed within the three dimensional space, reflecting the transition from one to the other and the connection between them all.

One design represented spaces as blocks and considered the idea of empty and occupied space. A number of blocks would be shown with some blank and others filled with block colour. This could work well animated, with the blocks changing between occupied and empty. Changing the blocks in this way would also create the impression of movement between and through a space as the filled blocks changed.

Another concept explored how space could be gradually broken down. This was shown through the separation of a square. It progressively was dismantled until the space was broken and free.

In contrast to this the idea of expanding space was shown using a square also. Initially starting with a solid square this was gradually broken and expanded into four and further into lines which only just maintained the shape.

Another concept explored the idea of shapes within a three dimensional space. It was considered that 'balls' could fill a space to show occupied space. It was also considered that these could be rotated within a space allowing the 'balls' to fill, move, link and fall through different sections as the space was rotated.

It was also considered that connections could be made between points within a space using a network of points and lines within a square.

Overlapping shapes were also used within a design. These would interlock creating joint space and large space. These could be different colours so when layered they create different colours. Animating this would allow for a wide range of shapes and colours to be created.

For the identities name we decided to go for Dimensions as this was referred to in one of the definitions of space ,'the dimensions of height, depth and width which all things exist and move' and would also work well when visualising space in a three dimensional way.
