Potential Ideas
- Stackable concrete bug houses with the shapes of the blocks based on architectural features of houses. This would reflect the idea of the habitat being a 'house' for bugs. The refined and geometric design would make the outcomes contemporary and adaptable. The block would be stackable and easily arranged in different formations. The blocks would have indented sections which would allow different materials suitable for insects, to be placed within them. They would combine elements of planting which would encourage the insects to make a home in the bug house.
- Bird box based on the idea of a log / tree trunk. This would reflect the context in which bird boxes are seen (bird boxes are usually fixed to trees or wooden posts) as well as the natural nesting habitat of birds (they often nest in hollows within trees)
- Rocks for frogs would simulate a rock pile which frogs often hide in because they like damp places. The rocks could be made from concrete so that they do not break when stacked up. Hollowed out 'rocks' would allow spaces for frogs to hide inside. The 'rocks' could be decorated in different colours and designs to reflect aspects of a frogs patternation.
- Bird boxes could be made to incorporate materials that reflect natural nest material. Creating a bird box out of wood and drilling holes into the design would allow willow to be weaved in and out of the box reflecting the use of twigs and sticks as natural nesting material, but in a more refined and contemporary way. The use of wood turned wood alongside the willow would create an interesting contrast in textures, whilst the use of only wood and willow would allow the design to fit into the garden environment.
