It was considered that within the planter designs different textures and materials could be represented within these graphically.



























The Garden DIY Expert contains information about garden construction as well as information about different features within a garden and materials used in the hard landscaping of  garden design. It breaks down the processes of hard landscaping such as laying paths, ponds, patios etc allowing people to do this themselves.

Within the book it outlines different features within a garden such as paving, fencing, edging, paths and the materials used to create these and their different types. Drawings within the book illustrate the textures and forms of these different materials, with these being used a reference for a materials list that was compiled. 












From the illustrations within the book, swatches of the different materials, textures and patterns used within hard landscaping were drawn out.

Key materials within the list included:

Concrete
- brushed , natural, smooth, exposed aggregate and mock crazy paving 

Paving Slab path
- textured, riven, patterned, parquet, cobbled, crazy paving

Edging 
- Strips - concrete or reconstituted stone strips, artificial brick strip, artificial, stone strip, 'Logg roll' strip, plank strip, sawn log strip 
- Bricks and Blocks - upright brick edging, dragons tooth brick edging, peat block edging 
- Tiles - plain tile, roll top tile, rope top tile, chelsea tile

Wall supports 
- Trellis - wood square mesh, wood diamond mesh, expanding diamond mesh, fan (wood), square mesh - rigid plastic or steel, mesh flexible plastic, expanding diamond mesh: rigid plastic, fan: rigid plastic or steel

Brick / Block Path 
- simple bond, running bond, basketweave bond, herringbone bond, caneweave bond

Paths
- bricks, stone, cobblestones, crazy paving, stepping stones
