OUGD603 - Brief 4 - Offcut Visual Identity - Research - Existing Craft / Arts / Materials Supplier Identities and Product Photography

Existing Craft / Arts / Materials Supplier Identities and Product Photography

SCRAP Leeds

- Scrap is a social enterprise in Leeds
- Collect waste material from businesses in their area to use as art supplies
- their products and facitilities are used by community groups , schools and for workshops
- they have a focus on helping the environment and stopping usable material going to landfill
- the shop has a particular focus on providing supplies for children to play and create with

- different letters from different typefaces are used within the logotype which reflects well the variety of materials available to buy within the shop. The use of the different sized type and the way some of these within the logotype are stacked within the design reflects the differing sized materials within the shop and the odd but organised arrangement of the materials within the shop.
- The use of colours from green to blue within the typeface reflect a sense of the environmental qualities of the business. The use of green creates an association with the idea of the environment which is obvious however the use of the the blue further reinforces this in a fresh and contemporary way by creating a sense of the sky and water.

- The shop supplies a range of different materials that wouldn't be found elsewhere meaning buyers will often find unique items each time they visit.

CASS Art

- The CASS Art branding uses type set in all Capitals and a stencil typeface creating a bold and impactful design.
- Phrases such as 'lets fill this town with artists' which are like calls to action and proactive in their wording are further emphasised by the strong use of bold typography.
-  The use of the stencil typeface within the design creates an artistic impression as well as creating a sense of protest within the design.

- the images within the photography are shot on a white background to create an element of consistency across the images and to allow the the products to stand out.

- Many of the product photographs which have a range of colours available, fan the product out so the rest of the colours can be seen within the same image.

- Centrally placing imagery within the frame creates balance within the layout

Fred Aldous

- Fred Aldous uses a calligraphic typeface that looks like its been created with a brush which creates a human element to the design and reflects the sense of someone signing their name, like on a painting.

- The large images on the site combine products from across their range. They are photographed on a coloured background creating a playful and contemporary aesthetic, whilst the products are equally spaced within the design creating balance and organisation within the image.

- Thumbnail images on the website often have multiple images within the square showing the different variations of the products.
- However there are different shapes and formats that the images are placed in and the backgrounds vary creating less consistency across the set of images.

- Using a solid white background for the images makes the colours of the products pop.

- Other images are photographed on a white background but are slightly greyer because they haven't been edited making them more reflective of the product in real life.
- Overall there are difference in the way the photographs are taken within the website, which perhaps makes it less consistent.

Hobby Craft

- Hobbycrafts logo focuses more on the craft element of an arts and crafts shop. The use of a running stitch around the outside of the logo reflects the process of sewing which is generally more associated with craft than it is art, linking to the name. Sewing is also seen as a traditional hobby which links well with the 'hobby' bit of the brand.

- The combination of the pink and purple within the design makes it look more targeted towards women which is perhaps a dated concept now. Arts, crafts and design are practiced by women, men and people of all ages which perhaps this doesn't reflect.
- the use of the lowercase type creates a sense of the the brand being friendly and accessible.

- Product photography for hobbycraft is again set on a white background to allow the products to stand out and be represented clearly.
- Depending on the product the perspective for the images change, meaning there is less consistency between different products than there is between similar products.

Material District

- Material District is a platform for new and upcoming and innovate materials and technologies. The website allows creatives (particularly for building),to contact suppliers of these materials

- The logotype uses a bold and geometric typeface with angular elements to the M and R creating a precise and slick looking design which is reflective of the cutting edge materials that the site promotes.

- Product photography is often close up to allow the materials texture, colour and consistency to be shown creating quite abstract shots which work well at reflecting the product.
- Different shots of the product are taken allowing the qualities of the product e.g. flexibility, thickness, colour variations and the product in context to be shown.
- Having context pictures for the different materials allows potential buyers to see how the product could be used and better helps the story of the product come through visually.
