OUGD603 - Brief 2 - Competition Brief - Starpack Awards (Street Art Planning Kit) - Spray Painting Experiments and Brick Rubbings

Spray Painting Experiments and Brick Rubbings

To test some of the techniques read about from research spray paint experimentation was carried out using letterforms. Potentially some of the techniques used could be refined and developed to use within the branding.

A few different typefaces were chosen to work with including stencil and typefaces with shadows as these are often used within street art.  The designs were cut from card to create stencils to then spray paint over. It was also considered that potentially the cut outs could be used also as stencils.

Using the spray paint over the stencils created a clean design despite only holding it up to the wall when spray painting the design.

Background colours could be added underneath the designs to create a two colour design which worked most effectively with the typeface with a shadow as this became part of the letterform itself.

The layering of the spray paint on the stencil created an interesting texture that could potentially be used.

Layering the letterforms over the top of another but slightly offset created a shadow effect to the design. However the use of a lighter colour over the top of a darker one muddies the colour a little.

Spray paint drips were created by holding the spray paint can close to the paper for a longer period of time.

Gradients were created with some colours by layering the spray paint which created an effective gradual change from one colour to the next.

Spraypaint strokes were also trialed by holding the can closer and further away from the surface.

It was considered that creating some brick textures could be useful in reflecting the surface that Street Art is often created on.

Pencils, charcoal and waxed crayons were used to capture the texture of the bricks.

Drawing lines on the paper over the surface of the wall allowed different textured lines to be created with different writing implements.

Creating small scribbles with different materials captured small amounts of texture and  linked to the idea of graffiti meaning a scrawl or scratch on a wall.

Some of these wall textures were photocopied and then some of the letterforms were spray painted over the top of them creating the impression of the letterform being applied to a wall as street art is.
