Initial Idea Mock Ups
To get a sense of how some of the ideas would be made mockups of some of the elements were made.
To create some of the mushrooms in a quick and simple way modelling foam was cut using a cutting knife. By cutting off section of the foam with a knife this reflected the effect of filing wood. Using this technique allowed the aesthetic of the filed wood to be visualised better, whilst the geometric but imperfect shapes created a contemporary but organic feel to the mushrooms. This also captured the forms and quirks of the mushrooms well through the use of this technique. Using a variety of forms within the composition created contrast within the design and made it more interesting. By placing the mushrooms on a 'log' this created context for the mushrooms and elevated them making them more of a focal point.
Using some tutorials on YouTube on how to make simple flowers some quick mock ups of a daisy and poppy were created using scrap paper. Although they were rough and the stems of the flowers needed to be much longer the construction of them created recognisable flower shapes. These were placed within some modeling foam to support them. The words bursting with life were also printed out and used in different ways within rough compositions.
It was considered that the flowers could be photographed from above with brown paper underneath the flowers to create the impression of the flowers growing form the soil. Scattering cut pieces of green paper over the 'soil' would create the impression of grass. The words 'Bursting with Life' would then be laid flat on the ground with the flowers growing up around the words. This was also tested with green paper, which potentially created a more vibrant aesthetic to the design. Alternatively it was considered the flowers could be photographed from the side so that you could see them growing upwards, with the words 'Bursting with Life' in the foreground and the flowers growing behind this. By cutting up the words 'Bursting with Life' these could be positioned inbetween elements within the composition through the use of wire. This would also create quite a playful feel to the layout of the text. The use of Basic Sans as a typeface and its flicks within the legs and ends of letters create a sense of the letterforms growing in these areas. It has a playful aesthetic which is approachable and celebratory. The quirks within the typeface work well in reflecting the imperfections and curves within nature.
By placing the mushrooms on the a block of wood the composition could be experimented with roughly. The mushrooms could be sat ontop of a piece of wood with the design photographed from the top so that only the tops of the mushrooms could be seen. The words 'Organic Alchemy' could then be laid flat on the top of the wood piece allowing the words to be slightly covered by the caps of the mushrooms. The typeface within this design has a rugged outline which creates a natural and textured impression which works well along side the use of the wood within the design. It was considered that the mushrooms could be placed ontop of the wood but photographed from the side. This would allow the different forms and heights of the mushrooms to be visible, whilst also allowing the text to be placed on the side of the wood. Using some mushrooms or leaves along the bottom of the wood might help soften the block of wood a little more.
