OUGD603 - Brief 2 - Competition Brief - Starpack Awards (Street Art Planning Kit) - Initial Ideas - Mindmaps

Initial Ideas Mind Maps

- Key bits of information were taken from the research into Street Art and condensed into a mindmap to highlight areas of interest that ideas could be developed from.  Key areas considered for ideas were the materials inside the kit, learning from logotype and packaging research, key words within Street Art, features of Street Art and the techniques used, and the production capabilities of tin plate.

- Initial ideas were developed in a mindmap from this condensed research mindmap.

- Reflect the materials inside the Street Art Planning Kit. Use Fred Aldous's plastic bag as a visual reference for the design. Create graffiti style illustrations / graphics of each material inside the box e.g. spray paint, markers etc. Alternatively stencil outlines of them could be created on the lid of the tin. These could be used as a stencil for spray painting the designs onto the wall.

- The first part of the process of Street Art is that ideas are sketched out onto a wall before paint or spray paint is added. Create the effect of pencil marks on a wall on the tin. The tin could be white with these lines on it to create the impression that could is to be added. Use only outlines for graphical and text elements. Alternatively some of the design could be coloured and the rest left white to create the impression that the design is not complete.

- Focus on the idea of things associated with the process of Street Art and the effects these processes and tools create. Consider: spray painting marks on a stencil and the splatters that this creates, bricks, drips on a can, a sketchbook of drawings or marker images, paint / spray paint drips, paint strokes, splatters around the edges of tools / tape /stencils. Apply these affects / textures and marks to the design of the tin and integrate into the branding.

- Focus on the idea of a King which is a well known graffiti artist. A gold tin could be used to create a sense of luxury, crown imagery could be played upon as this is what street artists use to signal a great street artist. Reflect the story of Banksy and King Robbo where they covered over each others work. Spray paint / cover an artwork on the tin, block it out with a roller and put King over the top.

- Focus on the use of three dimensional type within Street Art. Use techniques used in Street Art and apply these to typography within the branding and on the tin. Consider the use of , drop shadows, outlines, bright colours, block and calligraphic typefaces. Key words / street art terms could be used across the box. Leaving the metal bare on the tin allows the designs to stand out on the surface.

- Focus on the key features of street art writing in a close up way so that they become abstracted. Look at the spikes, curves, connecting points and interlocking letters seen within Street Art type. Photograph examples of these.
