General research

- The world is a terrarium
- rainforests and shrubberies reflect the plants within a terrarrium
- the ocean is the water, with the sun evaporating the water during the day and water vapour creating clouds. Precipitation then creates rain and puts this back into the environment
- a terrarium is separate from the outside ecosystem as the Earth is within space

- terrariums are also called glass gardens, wardian cases or vivariums
- they have glass sides and sometimes a glass top
- plants or animals can be kept within them
- they can be for 'decoration, scientific observation or plant or animal propagation'

- plants grown in cool temperatures - mosses, lichen, bloodroot, wood ferns, voilets, trailing artbutus and anemones
- warmer temperatures - begonias, croton, peperomia, creeping fig, selaginella, maidenhair fern, chinese evergreen

- succulent terrariums are practical for people who forget to water plants or don't have the time to look after them
- they are 'drought tolerant, vibrantly coloured and slow growing'
- terrariums can be an easy way of adding something living to an interior
- succulents are naturally from dry climates so retain water well
- they should be planted within an open terrarium so moisture can evaporate
- Kokedama are moss and string wrapped succulents with the name meaning 'moss ball'
- these work effectively within terrariums as they are mess free, easily movable and watered
- decorations within the terrarium such as crystals, shells etc need to be cleaned before being put within the terrarium
- tightly packed, full leaved plants should be chosen
- examples include Aloe Vera, Sedum and Echeveria
- darker coloured succulents are better in areas with less direct light
- only water with a little water at a time and allow this to soak in
- do not soak the plant
