OUGD603 - Brief 7 - Build a home for Wildlife - Research - Ikea Wildhomes for Wildlife

Wildhomes for Wildlife

- Ikea recently opened up a new London store which is sustainably driven
- Collaboration with Mother
- got eight local artists to make homes for animals made from upcycled Ikea furniture
- wildlife homes made for different wildlife including blue tits, bats and bees
-  Artists included Supermundane, Adam Nathaniel Furman, Je Ahn from Studio Weave, Hattie Newman, Beep Studio, Iain Talbot
- Je Ahn's work was painted black to give extra warmth to the bats
- Hattie Newman based is based around the idea of a Brazillian style bee village
- Adam Nathanial Furman created an insect city tower with holes all over the design
-  Beep Studio created a piece designed for nesting birds with pods at various heights
- Iian Talbots bug hotel used Ikea chairs, cladding and sand inside which makes it ideal for nesting mining bees and wasps
- Supermundane uses his bright and colourful style to create a bird house and bat house, with the bat house having rough surfaces to help bats grip the surface and the bird box having holes the correct size for blue tits.

- the vibrant colours used within the design create a bright and contemporary design
- the exotic town scene is playful and creates the impression the bees are living abroad or are on holiday in the habitat

- the use of a colour and black with geometric patterns creates a bold design
- the stacking of the different elements within the design creates a totem pole style form

- painting the design in all black allows the design to blend into its surroundings when dark
- the design is structurally interesting with the use of varying sized pieces of wood which create a sculptural quality to the design
- the hanging of the habitats upside down mimics how bats hang upside down

- having nesting pods at different heights and sizes allow a range of birds to roost in them
- attaching them all to a log mimics a tree form which is where birds would naturally roost

- the use of geometric shapes and bold colours within the design create a bat box that stands out against its surroundings

- there is a sculptural quality to this design because of the rocket like form created by the bending of the materials
