OUGD505 - Studio Brief 1 - Brief Considerations

Analysis of the Brief

Key parts of the brief

- must research a micro genre from http://everynoise.com/engenremap.html
- create an object based on an aspect of the genres characteristics
- the design must be celebrate or critique the genres characteristics
- do not limit ideas to purely digital, it should be an object
- use production methods that are appropriate to the subject
- must be suitable for public viewing

Considerations

- how does the genre help to understand issues in society?
- Jacques Attali's essential argument in Noise : The Political Economy of Music suggests music revolves around the mode of production in any society. The four cultural stages of music are sacrificing, representing, repeating and post repeating, which are all linked to a mode of production with technologies for producing, recording and communicating music. There are also different structures for transmitting and receiving music in different cultures. Exchange - time is time spent earning money for music while use - time is time spent listening. People aim to spend longer in use - time than exchange - time leading to consumer stockpiling of recordings.  Shorter music is therefore produced and is given value. How far are Attali's judgements true?
- consider the state of physical media and products within the music industry and culture.

Exhibition

- the outcome will be publicly exhibited in May in the Level 4 / 5 exhibition
