OUGD503 - Studio Brief 2 - Hasbro Board Game (Large Collaborative) - 'Peeled' Instructions Design

Designing the 'Peeled' Instructions

For the final design it was decided that the instruction would take the form of one of the fruit pieces when folded up. This would expand to form a circular design with instructions on both sides. The instructions would be split into sections to fit within the segments within the design. The process of opening up the instructions has similarities to the process of peeling a fruit.

It was considered that a circle could be folded into four, which formed a folded booklet. This format was effective for following the first four instructions however after this it reached the 'back page' of which the design then needs to be folded open, however this felt a little clunky and not very intuitive.

By cutting between to of the segments this created more of a concertina format which naturally 'expanded' to form the full circle making it feel more obvious how the instruction worked.

To aide the process of following the instructions in the correct order it was considered that each section should have a title and a number to make it clear how to read them.

It was considered at first that the text in the top boxes should vary between left and right aligned text and the reflected version of this in the bottom boxes, to emphasis and work with the quarter circle shape. However it was found that having right aligned text made it slightly difficult to read and not as natural as left aligned.

It was considered that there could be a dotted line to separate the different segments as this would reflect the divides seen in the pieces.

The titles could follow the line of the straight edges within the segments or the curved sections. Having it along the curved section could look more playful and emphasise the curved section of the segments, whilst leaving more space for text.

Making the text so that it is always aligned with the left vertical line within the segment design means that the text is always left aligned and easy to read. Having the text laid out in this way means that when someone reads the instructions they have to keep turning the circle round the read the next point making it interactive and engaging. Having the title text curve around the segments created a playfulness to the design however on some segments there was too much body text meaning that the titles were too close to the rest of the text which looked odd. Using the type on path tool allowed the text to curve with the design however for some of the titles this wasn't a perfect curvature with the letters looking slightly disjointed.

It was considered that each of the segments could have one of the fruit pieces behind it however when this was tried it was found that the text wasn't going to show up very well and also the design looked quite cluttered. The fruit could be further stripped back however this could lose the form of the segments. Also there are only three designs so this would still leave one segment left on each side.

To refine the design down whist still reflecting the essence of each of the pieces it was thought that the most dominant colour from each of the segment designs could be used within the instructions. Black could also be included to reflect the colour of the pips in some of the designs. Using the white on the coloured backgrounds makes the writing easy to read and works with the playful use of of colour. However possibly the black is too dark to use with the other colours and stands out too much.

Using the black on the coloured backgrounds does not make the design look as bright.

All of the fruit within the game piece designs have an outer skin shape. It was considered that this could be used within the instructions so that each segment had two colours creating variations of segments with the colour scheme.

The black was exchanged for white as this is the colour of the orange pips and all the stickers will also be stuck onto white acrylic. This colour allows the design to look a lot brighter however the it means that the text has to be coloured rather than white which is different to the rest of the design.

It was considered that the stickers for the pieces were going to be stuck onto white acrylic so using this colour within the design could be a good neutral colour to go alongside the other colours and to create contrast within the design. This would also allow for a subtler use of the colour scheme as this would only be used for the outer skin allowing the idea of a segment to still be created.

Using the same layout it was considered that each segment could have a different colour text from the outside skin to create contrast and a playful aesthetic. In this design the text in each of the pieces uses the colour of the skin from the segment before.

This design uses the same colour for the text and the outside skin creating a sense that each segment is different.
