OUGD503 - Studio Brief 2 - Hasbro Board Game (Large Collaborative) - Ideas for the packaging of the Game

Packaging Initial Ideas

'Netted Bag' Design

It was considered that the design could play on the concept of a netted bag which holds fruits such as oranges, lemons and limes etc. Having a mixture of fruit pieces would be better suited to this concept rather than just water melons as these don't usually come in this type of packaging. To create the 'netted' bag format it was thought that a design could be printed on to a drawstring bag which would hold the pieces within. It was considered that the logotype / logo could be put on the fabric however this would not be as clearly read because of the pliable nature of the material. Perhaps having a pattern using the forms created within the game could also be used behind the netted design.

Fruit Crate

Using the fruit crate as a reference it was considered that the packaging could take the form of a crate. The design, it was thought could be based on a fruit crate that is propped up, the packaging would be made of cardboard with a window through the front so all the pieces could be seen within, which would make the game clearly visible on the game. Inside the box a design of fruit crate wood would be printed making it look like the pieces are on display. It was also considered that the fruit crate could form a tin design where the pieces could be seen within from the top. The crate idea could also be physically made with wood using the laser cutter and the designs screen printed onto it. A plastic sleeve could then be wrapped around this so it slides on an off allowing access to the contents of the game inside.

Tin / Box

A tin in the shape of a segment could play on the shapes of the pieces within. However if multiple fruits are to be used then it would be difficult to use just one as this would not summarise the whole game.

Zip up Fruit Segment

Another idea would be to create a zip up pouch in the shape of a segment, which would be effective in adapting to the shape of the pieces within the packaging making it easy to pack all the pieces away. However there would still be a problem with only using one segment if lots of different types of fruit pieces are used within the game.

Fruit Cocktail Tin

Playing with the idea of fruit cocktail it was considered that the game could have multiple types of fruit within it. Fruit cocktail is a tinned item so the game could come in this format with the label having both the instructions and logotype on it, perhaps with an illustrated pattern to go alongside this.

Instructions

It was considered that the instructions could have illustrations of the segments to go alongside the written instructions making it easier to understand the game quickly. The layout of the design could be quite loose to create a playful and fun aesthetic to match the concept of the game. The format of the instructions could be in the shape of one of the segment pieces with instructions on both sides. However there may not be enough space for tall the instructions in this format so something larger may be needed. It was also considered that a circle could be folded down to create a segment shape. This would mean the instructions would fold out creating more space to play with in terms of layout.
The type could be arranged so that it follows the forms of the game pieces when used in the game. Having just curves or straight sections however would be most effective other wise the text will have to adapt to harsh corners which wouldn't work.
