OUGD503 - Studio Brief 2 - Hasbro Board Game (Large Collaborative) - Evaluation Against the Brief

Evaluation Against the Brief

The game reinvents the traditional game of Dominoes which was used as a starting point for the concept. Using this as a basis for research it was discovered that pips are another name for the spots on Dominoes providing a link to fruit as a visual for the game and the creation of pipped! the fruit matching game. The segment shape of the pieces dictated a new gameplay with ends naturally becoming blocked leading to play continuing from the other end, whilst a pipped! tile can be used to counteract this. The number combinations are based on a double six domino set which mean the gameplay would be functional. Feedback suggested that the design successfully took the traditional game of Dominoes and gave it a modern and contemporary aesthetic.

The game is made relevant to adults between 16 - 26 years old by making the existing game more challenging. The pips are various shapes and positioned differently for each fruit making it harder to work out which pieces match with which, whilst the addition of the pipped! tiles adds a further element of skill to the game making the gameplay more strategic. The use of fruit as a concept is suitable for both males and females, whilst the designs have a playful aesthetic through the use of clean, simple and colourful imagery to reflect each of the fruit. Feedback suggested that perhaps the design looked like it was for a younger audience but that the concept was strong. Potentially the neon colours on the bag were too bright making it look more childish , whereas dulling the colours slightly to match those in the instructions and tag would make the packaging more suitable for an older audience.

The game is fun and fast to play, being easily understood as dominoes is already a well known game. The game takes minutes to learn because of the easy to understand matching element, whilst the adapted shape of the pieces changes the original gameplay of Dominoes naturally without too much difference within the rules. The game can be played within 30 minutes as the game is played in rounds and players can dictate how many points they aim to get to depending on how much time they have to play. The instructions make the game easy to understand by breaking the rules down into key points making them succinct. The game is based on a double six set of dominoes which is suitable for 2 - 4 players making the game suitable for more than two players.

The deliverables for the brief were initially create a concept for a self contained game, including relevant packaging,  a video of the game play and visuals, a prototype or how to play video and two research and development slides. The brief was adapted to produce the physical game, concept, packaging, pieces and instructions for the game. Feedback suggested that the finish of the game and the production of the product was impressive.
