Hasbro D&AD New Blood Award
Give an old game a 21st century makeover, with a fresh twist for today's young adults
Considerations
- Find a forgotten, old or traditional board game
- should be for an adult audience looking for a fun and fast party game, 2+ people, 2 minutes to learn and 30 minutes to play
- aimed at 16 to 26 year olds, both men and women who like games
- the original game should be a starting point
- check the game hasn't been reinvented or change it radically
- make it a simple game
- shouldn't be controversial e.g. drinking games
- doesn't have to have a board e.g card, action and outdoor games, however needs to be packaged and sold for a better player experience
- must be self contained, doesn't need digital extensions to play
- should have strong graphic design, copywriting, branding and packaging
- test the game out
- how would it be sold in shops, launched or advertised?
Requirements
- a video showing the gameplay and visuals, with launch concepts etc
- only videos will be looked at in the first stage of judging
- can send a playable prototype
- show research and development and clearly show which game has been used and how it has been reinvented, whilst showing why design decisions have been made

- a physical playable prototype with instructions or 2 min proof of concept video
- Research and development should be on 2 jpeg slides or a 30 second video

Background
- reviews the theories of leading scientists and explores concepts about space and time
- succinct language introduces people to the universe
- the book aims to explain different scientific phenomena
- is aimed at a non - specialist reader
- Has been translated into 35 languages and is a bestseller
Considerations
- the book needs to break boundaries and show it as a revolutionary book with popular appeal
- shouldn't look like a textbook
- should feel timeless, confident and appeal to a new generation
Requirements
- needs to include all the cover copy
- needs to fit the design template B format 198mm high, 129mm wide and spine width 17mm
- needs all the penguin branding and barcode
- copyright needs to be cleared and everything should be credited
What the judges are looking for:
- striking cover design that is eyecatching
- both back and front must work together as a cohesive piece
- an imaginative concept
- original interpretation of the brief
- strong use of typography
- appeal to a broad audience
- show understanding of the marketplace
- needs a point of difference from other books on the market
- needs to work effectively as ebooks and in traditional print so point size needs to be considered at smaller sizes

Background Info
-Originally written in 2001
-Key themes within the book are racism, terrorism, the class system and artificial divides between people
-Themes have relevance now
Considerations
- needs to bring the book to a new generation
- should remain as an important book for teenagers to read
Requirements
- needs to include all the cover copy
- needs to fit the design template B format 198mm high, 129mm wide and spine width 28mm
- needs all the penguin branding and barcode
- copyright needs to be cleared and everything should be credited
What the judges are looking for:
- striking cover design that is eyecatching
- both back and front must work together as a cohesive piece
- should encourage children to buy the book and for parents to buy it for them
- an imaginative concept
