Designing the Tag for the Game
To correspond with the aesthetic of both the instructions and the bag the same colours were experimented with within the tag design. The packaging is a drawstring bag so the title of the game could not be printed onto the front of the bag and be clearly visible. It was decided instead that a tag would be tied to the top of the bag making the name clearly visible. The design for the tag will use fruit stickers as a reference for the design. With this in mind and the fact that the game pieces are going to be made using stickers on acrylic it was considered that the tag would be made in the same way.
Most fruit stickers are either circular or oval, with both shape being suited to aspects of the game, with a circle reflecting the shape when four pieces are combined, and an oval reflecting the shape of a pip, so both of these were trialed.
Initially four pieces using the colours within the other designs were combined to make a circle. Making the logotype white on top of these colours made the text stand out. However where all the pieces joined in the centre was distracting and didn't represent the aesthetic of the instruction manual.
To better reflect the instruction manual the outline of the circle was divided into four to create the 'skin' of the four segments seen in the instruction manual. Pipped! was placed centrally within this to make it clear within the design.
It was considered that the shape could be made into an oval shape to reflect the pip shape, by compressing the design however this altered the thickness of the original line. To rectify this it had to be redrawn.
Having a lighter line around the design didn't stand out very well so the thickness had to be increased. Placing the words 'the fruit matching game' under the title makes it clear what the game is about in a simple phrase.
Overall the oval shaped design is the most effective as there is a good balance between the design and negative space, whereas in the circular design there is a lot of white space.
Also the oval shape makes reference to the shape of the pips and the classic fruit sticker.
To further develop this idea if the design is going to be stuck onto a piece of acrylic there will need to be a hole in the acrylic to be able to tie it around the the drawstring bag. This hole may also have to go through the sticker so this needs to be considered within the design so that it doesn't go through any part of the design.
