OUGD503 - Studio Brief 1 - G.F Smith Calendar (Large Individual) - Typeface Research

Colourplan Light Typeface by Colophon Foundry

This typeface was designed to sit alongside G . F Smith Bold type as part of the typography used with the Colourplan papers. The typeface uses flicks on letters such as the l, a, and u to create a sense of playfulness, reflecting the versatility of the papers themselves and what can be created with the papers and their combined colours. Having large counters within the typeface particularly on the o and p creates a sense of lightness to the design. Within promotional material for the papers numbers act as a way of determining the thickness / quality of the paper. To increase the legibility of this information non lining numerals were used, which also meant classical elements could be used in the contemporary design. This allows a sense of heritage to be created within the design reflecting the long history of the company. The light typeface was created to reflect a sense of elegance across all promotional material and the use of a singular weight allows for consistency across designs whilst allowing the paper to be the main focus of any design.
