OUGD503 - Studio Brief 1 - G . F Smith Calendar (Large Individual) - Type Choices

Type Considerations

Initial Type Choices

Initial type selection aimed to portray certain things:
- A sense of playfulness was important to reflect the creativity that can be used with the papers. This it was considered could be reflected through curved spurs and flicks on letters as seen in the original Colourplan typeface.
- The papers should be allowed to be the focus of the design as this is the product. Having a light typeface will allow the type to become secondary to the paper creating hierarchy within the design.
- The heritage of the company should be played upon. The use of non lining numerals allow classical elements to be integrated which is also seen in other G . F Smith material.
- A mix of curved and angular shapes within a typeface would reflect the geometric nature of the shapes within the design.

From the initially selected typefaces FreightSans Pro Book and Raleway Light were chosen as possibilities for the design.

Both have similar features Raleway Light and FreightSans Pro Book have similar features. Raleway Light has more emphasised curves and rounded counters creating a more geometric feel to the numbers, however FreightSans Pro Book has an almost perfectly circular 0 reflecting the shape of the calendar design. Both have spurs on vowels such as a and u creating a playful aesthetic.

However Raleway Lights 'W' which is used in 'Week' crosses over itself which looked too distinctive and stood out from the rest of the design making it look inconsistent. With this in mind it was decided that FreightSans Pro Book would be used for the final design.

The use of only one typeface within the design meant that increasing the weight of the month created some contrast and hierarchy within the design.
