Technician advice on producing the pieces
Asking the print room technician about the process of screen printing onto acrylic led to some interesting alternatives. He said that :
- screen printing onto the acrylic would work however it may eventually wear off because it was being applied to a smooth surface rather than something with texture
- screenprinting on to a coloured surface may also change the colours that are screen printed on top
- if the design was to be screen printed a varnish could be applied on top to keep the colour on the surface however this may also rub off eventually
- adding a clear vinyl over the top of the screen print would be a more permanent fix
- thermography could also be used where the ink is heated up then applied to the surface however this may also eventually wear off but may be stronger than normal screen printing
- down in digital print there is the option to digitally print a design onto vinyl which could then be applied onto the acrylic like a sticker
From this it was considered that making the pieces with stickers would be much easier than screenprinting and more durable for the game. The technician in the digital print workshop gave some further advice and suggested that:
- the design could be cut from coloured vinyl then applied to the acrylic
- the design could be digitally printed on clear vinyl to allow the colour of the acrylic to show through, however he said that the colour would also affect the printed design making the colours look slightly different to the original
- the design could be digitally printed onto white vinyl, which would print the colours so they were as vibrant as a normal print
- to create a sticker there would need to be two layers on the Illustrator file, one with a black outline for where the sticker will be cut out and one with the actual colour design on it which will be printed.
