Initial Ideas
One idea would be to reflect the amount of light that hits different parts of the Earth at different times of the year as it orbits the sun, making the seasons. This would be done by drawing lines through a circle to show the sunny area and shaded areas of the Earth, which would vary in shape and size because they would be based on the perspective of some of the diagrams that have been looked. Many of these are angled so you are looking from outside the orbit into it. From this perspective it was considered that there would be a greater variety of different shaded and light areas.
It was considered that these two segments within circles could be created using two different Colourplan papers. This would allow the sunny area to be shown however the colour combinations would be able to reflect the a changes in seasons from page to page. This ideas form would follow the circular shapes of the sheets creating a stack of pages. It was considered that the divide between the two colours could allow writing space e.g. for jotting notes and the other half could act as a calendar. As a memo pad format it was thought that it could be either monthly or weekly.
The use of the circles could also be adapted so that there is one for each day in an advent calendar style. There would be 365 circles with the divides and colours of the papers changing throughout the year. It was considered that each of the circles could have a perforated line which would allow part of the circle to be folded back or torn off to reveal another colour underneath creating the two coloured circles. The perforated tear off section would be reflective of other G . F Smith promotional materials. This idea could also just be so that it reveals a whole colour dot rather than a divided dot. Having a whole colour dot reflects the colour chips that G . F Smith developed.
Another idea was to represent the different positions of the Earth around Sun at different points throughout the year by using a series of gradually decreasing circles which curve into the distance (corner of the page). Each of the different circles would be a different colour which would be relevant to the season it would be in, which would be dependent on where it was within the sequence. Each page would be monthly and only three or four circles would be visible into the future. The difference between each page would be you would gradually move from one coloured circle to the next, like you are moving from one position around the Sun to another.
It was considered that the calendar could reflect the growth and decay of leaves by layering pages up. Gradually the leaf shapes would increase from page to page e.g. Spring would have some small ones and larger one, Summer all large leaves, Autumn less and less, Winter no leaves. It was also thought instead that the leaves could fold up making the design three dimensional and tactile.
Another idea was to reflect how the length of the days increase and decrease over the year. This would be reflected by a circle moving up the piece of paper over the year. It was considered that over a month the sun moves across the sky as well.
The idea of differing lengths of day and night could be further represented by having a dot above and below a horizontal line with the 'sun' being the dot above the line and the dot below being the moon. The dots would move up or down from the horizontal line depending on the amount of hours of each during that week. Alternatively adding a curved line on each design would also create the idea of the sun going across the sky. Over the course of a week the dot would move across the sky. On the next week the dot would move up and curve across the sky as the days progressed.
A further idea was to have more geometric designs reflecting different scenes for the different seasons e.g. snowy trees, growing trees. Each season would have its own pouch with the design cut into it so that the coloured paper within can be seen. The internal piece of card would be pulled up out of the pouch in increments as the month goes by. This would create a change within the image e.g. snow receding off the trees over the month. By pulling the tab on the piece of paper within the pouch this would reveal a new week each time as well as change the image.
