OUGD503 - Studio Brief 2 - Hasbro Board Game (Large Collaborative) - Logotype and Body Typeface

Pipped Game Logotype and Body Typeface

To create the logotype for the game, characteristics of a pip were considered as starting points and inspiration for its design.

Characteristics of Pips:

- there are more than one within a fruit
- they are small
- they are curved
- they are oval
- they are squat
- they have a pointed end

The typefaces that were looked at initially had a range of features for to reflect different aspects of the game:

- adding an exclamation mark could be a good way of creating a sense of playfulness and action within the logotype.
- setting the logotype in all lowercase looked less formal and more friendly which would make the game look fun to play and appeal to a young adult audience.
- typefaces with the circular counters reflected the combined shape of four pieces within the game which makes reference to the form of the game.
- typefaces with rounded finials reflect the curved shape of the actual pieces
- some of the typefaces have oval / teardrop shaped counters reflecting the shape of pips well
- typefaces with these oval / teardrop counters often have a more organic look to them better reflecting the nature of fruit, whilst some also maintained the pip theme with rounded sections that meet at an angle e.g. in the letter p
- some of the compressed typefaces reflected the ovalness of a pip however didn't stand out as much as some of the other typefaces
- having a slightly heavier typeface would stand out and grounds the design more

Logotype Typeface choice

From these typefaces Cocon Pro Regular was chosen as this had a range of characteristics that reflected the game well.

Features and what they reflect:
- the finials on the typeface reflect the shape of the quarter circle pieces within the game
- the counters and bowls of the letters p and d are slightly compressed and oval rather than circular reflecting the shape of a pip
- the contrast between strokes within the letterforms reflects the organic nature of the game and the fruit.

Adapting the typeface
- the curved section in the letter 'i' stood out within the design so this was adapted to so that there was no terminal. Originally this letter was changed to a different typeface however it was then considered that the form of the exclamation mark could be used to create the 'i' by turning it upside down.
- the tittles on the design were changed from a perfect circle to a oval shape to better reflect a pipped shape.

Body Typeface

Domus Regular was chosen as the body typeface because:
- the typefaces is lighter than the logotype which will create contrast within the design and a hierarchy
- the rounded finials within the design reflect the curved nature of the game pieces whilst creating a sense of playfulness.
