OUGD503 - Studio Brief 2 - G . F Smith Calendar (Large Individual) - Production of Final Design

Production

To create the final design everything had to be printed and then lasercut. The designs for each week within a month were grouped together so that they could all be printed onto the right card. The original file was then duplicated and adapted to create a print document and laser cutter document. It was important to use this original file as the positioning of all the elements had to be exactly the same in both documents, however certain things were deleted for each. For the print document only the text and a box around all of the pieces was printed on each piece of card. The box would be used as a way of registering the laser which would allow each of the designs on the A4 sheets to be cut more accurately with the type in the right place. A second document duplicate of the original was created for the laser cutter, which only had the outlines of each of the pieces and the box around those pieces.
The G . F Smith paper prints best when put through a laser printer as the text is much more defined when compared with putting the paper through an inkjet printer.

To laser cut the designs the laser document was used. When all of the designs were printed it was found that the boxes around the shapes had been cut off because of the 5mm bleed. However lines were drawn back onto the printed design through the use of a lightbox. Only the bottom horizontal and left vertical line were needed as registration.

The designs were initially printed and laser cut however when they were all put together it was found that two of the months didn't have the hole in the right place so they didn't create the circular shape. This meant that the whole deign needed to be reprinted. Also some of the cross over weeks had different week numbers on them despite being in the same week.

The design for September and March was adapted so that the hole was moved up which meant it aligned with the rest of the design. After adapting the hole the numbers for these designs had to be rearranged and the lines readjusted to radiate from this new hole.

The base was cut from white acrylic to allow the coloured paper to stand out and a dowel was glued in the hole so all the paper could then be put in place, with the stopper ontop.
