How can we best utilise green spaces in cities?Survey Questions and Results

What types of green space have you visited in Leeds?









Parks and Squares were found to be the used spaces within Leeds, whilst Gardens and Roof Gardens were the least used however this could be because there are not many of them in the city centre.


What do you use green space for in Leeds?










Most people use green spaces for walking or travel through them to get to somewhere suggesting that people enjoy taking a more scenic route. Relaxation and socialising also scored highly suggesting that people like to spend extended amounts of time within green spaces rather than in doors.


What types of green space do you want to see more of within Leeds to increase your satisfaction within the city? These may not currently exist.










People would like to see greener streets / buildings and nature trails scored highly suggesting that people enjoy travelling along a route.

What would encourage you to use green spaces in Leeds more?










Having easier access to green spaces and more places to see wildlife scored highly, suggesting that people want to feel more connected to nature and be able to use green spaces more.

Do you feel connected to nature in green spaces within the city? If so where do you feel most connected to nature?








Overall people suggested that they do feel connected to nature within green spaces however this can also depend on the type of green space they are in.

Is access to green space important to you within Leeds?










Access to green space is important to people within Leeds.


Are there any disused spaces that you have noticed around Leeds?










Are you ever put off using some green spaces in Leeds? Why?










People are put off using green spaces if they are messy which creates an unpleasant environment. If spaces are too far away they are less likely to use them.

Do you think green spaces in Leeds allow for a range of wildlife to be seen? If so where do you see wildlife?









It is suggested that there are not enough places to see wildlife within the city however the results are quite close. It was suggested that larger parks perhaps allow more wildlife to be seen.


How would you describe your journey around Leeds in terms of green space, nature and greenery?










Most people suggest that Leeds is a mix of urban and natural areas suggesting that there is a range of green spaces available.


Overall from the results it was suggested that:

- People like to spend extended amounts of time within green spaces for things like socialising.
- People travel within and through green spaces a lot, potentially because of the nice environment 
-The city has a mix of urban and green areas so perhaps not all of them are used or know about.
- There may not be enough places to see wildlife within the city and in green spaces, this could be due to a lack of the correct habitats and potentially green spaces aren't being used correctly for wildlife and people.
- People suggested that they feel connected to nature in green spaces within Leeds however don't feel they see enough wildlife.
-  The distance between people and a green space affects whether they will use it.
- Being able to see more wildlife would also encourage people to use the green spaces more.
- Access to green space is important to a majority of people.
