OUGD505 - Studio Brief 2 - City Patch Project - Grid Considerations

Grid Considerations

To be in keeping with the shape of the patch in the branding and the square format of all the elements within the member pack it was thought that a square modular grid would be the most appropriate choice for the design.

Newsletter Grid System

Map Grid System

Seed Packet Grid System

Certificate Grid System

Features of the grid systems used:

- The square modular grid would allow imagery to be cropped to create squares reflecting the patch idea within the branding
- Having a 5mm margin around the outside of the designs meant that information and headers would be close to the edge without looking too tight
- Matching the 5mm gutters with the 5mm margins creates equal spacing an outline around all elements creating consistency.
- Splitting some of the larger grid systems into further squares allows smaller elements to be placed, e.g. image information and small brand ornaments, in  materials such as the newsletter and map where there is a lot of content.
- The map grid was developed to compensate for the fact the design folds down into four. With this in mind the grid system was created so that there was a 5mm margin in each quarter from the fold lines. This would allow imagery and text to be placed with a border or image could e extended to reach the fold line where they would be cropped off
- Splitting the grid into an even amount of squares allows elements to be placed to create balance and symmetry, which can be explored within the designs
