Final Outcome and Evaluation
The outcome is in response to the micro genre of Ambient Music which was found on everynoise.com.The object is a reflection of a compost heap which can be walked around and viewed from different perspectives. The use of different materials and colours to recreate a compost heap creates a sense of tactility ad materiality within the design making it an engaging object for an exhibition. A key characteristic of Ambient music is the production methods used. The design comments on the use of environmental recordings and non instruments that Brian Eno used in the construction of his Ambient music. A passage from his 'On Land' linear notes was used as a starting point for the design - where he describes his process as being like composting - with symbols being created for the different elements described in the passage. Combining these elements within the compost heap aims to reflect a cross section of the process of creating this genre of music.
The outcome is suitable for public exhibition because it is small enough to be elevated on a surface, allowing the design to be explored on all sides creating multiple viewing points. The symbols and elements within the design are playful and appropriate for all ages.
The production methods of Ambient music are celebrated through the use of colour and symbols representing the different sources of sound described in the original quote. The use of rich coloured sands create a bold design, whilst the positioning of elements within the compost heap is playful and engaging. This creates a sense of movement within the compost heap highlighting the many elements and influences that go into the construction of Ambient music.
