Studio Brief 1 - Wayfinding - Word Association

Word Association with each of the locations

Whilst trying to come up with design ideas for the Coats of Arms for each place I was finding it difficult to visualise symbols for each place without being obvious and generic. To combat this I visited all the places on the trail and took photos of the locations. In a previous Study task we created symbols from adjectives given to us which became quite abstract. Drawing inspiration from this  I listed words that I associated with the different places so I would have something less literal to work from . This would also encourage me to look at the places more subjectively rather than the obvious objective interpretations of the locations.

Words I would use to describe each of the locations on the trail

Town Hall: Luxury, immense, Grand, Central, Tall, Permanent
Millennium Square: Open, square, Flat, Scale, Isolated
Leeds City Council Building: Dominant, Eye Catching, Imposing
Civic Hall: Heritage, Importance, Craftsmanship, Historic, Enclosing
Leeds Museum: Industry, Wear, History, Stone, Working, Functional, Gritty
St Anne’s: Hard, Angular, Gothic, Bold,
War Memorial: Sombre, Hopeful, Peaceful, Elegant
Leeds Library: Intricate, Unassuming, Beautiful, Detailed, Elegant
Library Tapestry: Handmade, Craft, Dedication
Municipal Railings: Hidden, Unassuming, Florishes, Quirky
