Studio Brief 1 - Wayfinding - Lines of Partition

Using Lines of Partition with initial designs

Placing the symbols within a shield could further emphasise the link to heraldry.

By combining heraldratic partition lines with the symbols for each place this adds further links to heraldry whilst also describing the places further. This will also allow more ‘areas’ to add colour to making the designs more interesting.

Lines of Partition include:
-        Embattled which reflects the battlements on a castle or a town
-        Raguly which means difficulties have been encountered
-        Dovetailed which means
-        Indented which means fire
-        Invected which means Earth or Land
-        Wavy which means sea or water
-        Nebuly which means clouds or air
-        Dancetty which means water

Using the Nebuly line reflects air so this has been used to represent the sky with the triangle pushing up into it. This signifys the height of the town hall which pushes up into the sky.

The use of both invected lines which represent the Earth or Land represents the ground which the church sits on. The nebuly line is then used to represent heaven with the church directing up to it.

The Raguly line suggests that difficulties have been encountered, showing how hard and time consuming it would have been to create the work. The x’s signify the stitches in the tapestry.

The square represents a sense of boundary and permanence so is effective in portraying both the town halls strong structure and its position within the centre of the city. The embattlement line reflects a town so is appropriate in reflecting the positioning of the town hall.
