Matt Shlian
The Natural History Museum was chosen as the venue for the exhibition poster. The Museum has a huge collection of Rocks and Minerals so the poster was designed to promote a fictitious event based around the collection.
For the paper sculpture, geometric shapes were created to reflect the forms of crystals. The work of Matt Shlian was a particular influence. His work consists of modular paper folding which come together to form geometric patterns. Nets for each of the shapes and elements are constructed individually then arranged on a larger surface. The use of a singular colour in his work and the three dimensionality of the pieces creates shadows across the design adding depth and tone to the works. This works well in emphasising the faces of the shapes even when made out of the same coloured material. His use of metallic card creates a glistening, crystal like appearance, whilst his two toned paper creates the appearance of marble reflecting a stone like quality.
