Studio Brief 1 - Wayfinding - Research - National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation

National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation

As a wayfinding system, the lit, glass, sign panels are integrated into the ground creating contrast between the system and the flooring making it more defined and clear. The use of elements in a modular way makes it more effective and noticeable in a larger sign system, drawing the eye downwards, making it functional. Features such as anti – slip grains on the surface means the system has taken into consideration practical environmental problems. It is an intuitive system meaning you don’t have to ‘look’ for instructions instead you follow them as a continuous path rather than moving from sign to sign as in ordinary wayfinding systems. By presenting the system in black and white this does not take the focus away from the work within the museum and prevents clashes with elements within the building. The use of identification codes and pictograms speed up the wayfinding process giving it ease of use. The system is multilingual making the information accessible for tourists.  By creating a typeface from the sans serif font, Frutiger, it means it is legible and clear, and with the use of rounded terminals, it creates a friendly and welcoming sense. The design reflects the innovative content within the museum.
