Penguin Book Covers - Collaging

Collaging with the Images

The images were adjusted so that the contrast was heightened and hues were changed to create single colour images. This worked well for some images however on others when the images were printed they did not retain the colours that were seen on the screen. The Labyrinth images worked particularly well because of the high contrast between the black and colour in the images.

By using the same images in different ways some interesting collage designs were created. Layering the different variations of the Labels images created depth and drew the eye into the central image. The use of a black and white image with a coloured image complemented each other well. The use of geometric shapes is effective with the detail of the images.
For the Labyrinth images collaging the images in strips created a disorientating feel to the outcomes. Although cut so that the strips lined up with one another a strange sense of depth was created with the use of another colour.

The Labels collages were much more story like and played on the line in the blurb ‘his pen cuts through the local colour’ . To represent this I took pictures of a pen at different angles so that it looked like it was drawing across the map. Another variation was using the pictures of the labels and adjusting them so that they were bright and warm colours. This reflected the beginnings of a Mediterranean colour pallet however this could be further improved by the use of blues and greens as well.
