OUGD603 - Statement of Intent / Position Statement

Statement of Intent / Position Statement

My practice will be both concept and process driven, with a focus on experimenting with relevant physical processes and techniques to create strong outcomes. Projects will be research led, with this influencing the development of a project heavily. Within my work I will look into how type and image are used within 3D based work and will focus on creating physical outcomes within most of my briefs. Themes within my work will broadly consider nature / the environment, arts and heritage and materials in terms of reuse, sustainability and experimenting with these. Within my work I will explore how graphic design is used within a three-dimensional space or product / object. Throughout the year I hope to further refine and define areas of interest within 3D design whilst considering this in relation to graphic design. I hope to expand my knowledge of different processes and techniques through the use of different workshops and advice from technicians. Production and the use of materials and processes to create my work will be important through the year.

Primary research will include testing designs practically through different materials, processes and techniques as well as visiting museums and galleries. Secondary research will include looking at existing graphic design examples and examples of work from the fields of interest. Subject specific websites and books relevant to each brief will also be used.

All experimentation, research and development will be documented on a blog, with photographs being used to show practical experiments within projects. Sketchbooks will be used for each project as a way of separating and understanding projects more. Reflections on the effectiveness of designs, processes and experimentation will be documented on the blog, whilst regular feedback from both formal and informal crits will help guide development of projects.

To manage projects both a weekly and monthly calendar will be used as a way of defining which projects are done when and what specific tasks are done on days during the week. Maintaining a list of blog posts to be done will allow all aspects of a project to be documented. Keeping up to date with this will allow me to better reflect on the work created within a brief and enable me to move forward more effectively.
