Cover Development
- It was considered that the cover could be made from two pieces of card layered over the top of each other with the top piece of card cut into a geometric shape. This would reflect the same layering that was created through the process of combining all the pages within the book. It was considered that perhaps a muted natural coloured paper could be used as the top layer of the cover or potentially some recycled card, however this perhaps might look a little plain and perhaps less celebratory of the papers.
It was suggested that perhaps the paper flap could be created from florescent green as a contrast to the pages within in. The use of the green would create a bold and contemporary aesthetic that would make the notebook stand out. The use of the green would also link to the idea of sustainability and reuse and recycling but in a bright and bold way, which is perhaps not always the case when green is used in relation to this idea.
To reflect the layering of the pages it was considered that the page underneath the flap could use one of the line layouts used within the book as a way of making a visual tie with the contents of the book.
Different pages and angles of the flap were trialled. It was considered that potentially the flap shouldn't be too large as this would detract from the lines underneath and perhaps be a little to bold.
Angling the flap in different ways and the use of different lined pages underneath created varying amounts of negative space within the design.
When the flap was at too much of an angle this meant the title of the book potentially wouldn't fit at the bottom of the flap as with previous designs, so this could be moved over to the white page underneath. By doing this it would also allow the text to stand out more effectively on the white background.
- A layout of the cover was printed out and a sheet of Day Glo paper cut to the correct size so that the flap was the right shape on both the front and back covers.
- Wrapping this around the precut text block meant that the dimensions of the cover could be checked.
