Text Experiments
- It was initially considered that the outline of the text could be lasercut by reducing the kerning between letters so that they overlapped one another and became one shape.- Overlapping the text and reducing the kerning would emphasise the idea of 'bursting' as the type would look like it is expanding, whilst the use of the bold text would create the impression of it being quite big and full.
- Letters such as R, S and T in Bursting looked like they could have quite a natural interlinking between the letters because of the curves within the R's leg and the S.
- The slight angle at the tips of the S meant these didn't directly align with the R's leg so just linking the points looked clumsy
- Adapting the S so that it had flatter curves allowed a smooth line to be created between this and the R and T, however this perhaps looked to slick for such an organic piece of work.
- Making the link between the letters more curvy and wavy created a more natural feel to the letterforms.
- When these joined letterforms were digitalised and placed in amongst the other letters within the words it was found that perhaps some of the curves within the letters looked too slick and a little odd in comparison to the rest of the overlapped letters.
- Trying to join the two lines of text together looked clumsy, especially because some of the letters had to be elongated to reach the word above.
- It was considered that only using the close kerning so that the letters would overlap was the most effective way of setting the type. The type itself already had organic curves and quirks within letterforms that created a sense of natural elements within the typography.
- Overlapping the letters in 'Bursting' meant that the I and N blended together to become one shape which looked odd. Spacing between these letters would be needed however this would mean that the last few letters wouldn't be joined to the rest of the typography when lasercut. The I and N would have to be adapted to connect them which would make this section of typography look different to the rest.
- If the typography was to be lasercut then mounted on wire within the design the tittles within the typeface would be lost, also the design may not be strong enough to support itself
- Whilst putting the leaves into the composition with the flowers it was thought that the typography could be used on the leaves, either lasercut from the leaf or another coloured paper could be laser cut then stuck to the leaf.
- The leaves within the design aren't huge so it was thought that the typography could be spread over two leaves with 'bursting' on one leaf and 'with life' on another.
- Because 'Bursting' is set in capitals it was thought placing this on a larger leaf would allow the design to fill the space and be as large as it could, whilst 'with life' could be placed on a longer leaf as this was smaller.
- The designs were cut out of the different leaves however this didn't work because the counters of the letters dropped out. The type would have to be adapted to prevent this happening which would create a different effect within the typography which was not wanted.
- The letters were lasercut out of another coloured green so they could be overlaid to create contrast, however when this was done it was found the letters were going to be too small to stick by hand to the leaf.
- It was considered that cutting the designs out of vinyl would allow the small text to be more easily applied to the leaves.
- Using the dark green vinyl on light green paper and vice versa allowed the typography to complement the tones of the papers well, however perhaps would not stand out within the rest of the design.
- Using the white vinyl on the green paper stood out well on the paper and within the design, whilst also being subtle because of its size on the leaf. The use of the white also linked well with other white elements within the flowers.
