OUGD603 - Brief 7 - Build a home for Wildlife - Development - Plan for cutting the pieces and hole considerations

Plan for cutting the pieces and hole considerations

- The designs would be cut from 15mm plywood as this would be thick enough to provide the correct amount of insulation for the birds inside

- A plan of all the pieces was drawn out and arranged so that they could be cut from a 4 x 4 sheet of plywood which would make the design  more cost effective than using a whole sheet.

- The bits were cut on an industrial circular saw.

- It was considered that because the boxes were all going to be different sizes that the holes size should also be different sizes as this would allow different types of birds to be attracted to each of the boxes. It was decided that the smallest box would have a 25mm hole making it suitable for blue, coal and marsh tits, the medium one would have a 32mm hole for house sparrows and nuthatches and the largest box a 45mm hole for starlings. This would also allow the size of the boxes to be more appropriate to the types of birds that would be using them.
