Bees and Butterflies
Within the design their would be a focus on pollinators. Because the composition used standing flowers and leaves in the lower section it was thought that the insects could be placed inbetween elements by mounting them on wire in the same way as the flowers. Using pollinators that fly such as bees and butterflies would be most appropriate as these would be moving from flower to flower at this height. The use of the wire would blend in with the rest of the design as this had been used for the flower stems so would be inkeeping. Using wire would also be more practical than hanging the butterflies.
To create the bees and butterflies it was thought that simplified icons of them could be created in black and white as this would contrast against the other elements within the designs.
Outlining the different elements in either white or black allowed the different shapes to stand out form one another. This was useful for the legs as it allowed the full shape of the leg to be seen on the black body, however outlining the smaller parts of the leg looked a little clumsy.
Although based on the bee image above when converted to black and white the form of the bee looked more like a wasp. Although wasps are also pollinators they potentially have more of a negative reputation than bees.
It was thought that potentially the bees could be designed from a top perspective and made to look more rounded. Simplifying the shapes made the designs look more like icons however these could be refined further.
To create the butterflies one wing was made first then reflected to create symmetry within the design. Making the wings one shape looked more refined than breaking it up into two sections.
It was considered that the designs could be broken up into different elements so that areas such as the wings could be folded upward to create a more three dimensional design that would be inkeeping with how the paper flowers were created.
Although the wings were made three dimensional this potentially still did not fit with the rest of the design as the body elements were flat. Also the use of black and white for the insects potentially stood out too much alongside the flowers.
