Photography compositions outdoors
The design with the leaves as a background were not working as effectively as anticipated. Instead it was considered that the flowers could be stood upright within something so they were in a more natural position.
To create a sense of the flowers growing it was thought that they could be photographed outdoors using real elements within the composition.
Placing the flowers in the ground and photographing them so the camera was parallel to the design allowed the grass to become part of the composition. Placing a blue sheet of paper behind the design blocked out what would have been a busy background and allowed the focus of the design to be on the flowers themselves. Using the blue paper created the impression of the sky which worked well alongside the vibrancy of the colours within the other elements in the design. Photographing the design in bright sun light created shadows from the flowers on the paper which filled the composition more and made the paper flowers look more elevated.
If this set up was to be used the design would have to exist as a poster as the grass couldn't be used in real life. This would mean that the words 'Bursting with life' could be overlaid onto the image.
Alternatively it was thought that a mound of soil could be used with the flowers and leaves growing out of this, to create the impression of how wildflowers can be grown in a small space. Again the blue paper allowed all the elements to stand out and reflected a sense of the sky. The paper underneath the soil would have to be changed as this makes the join between the two papers more noticeable. Potentially a larger sheet of blue paper could be used to sit the design on and then it could curve to create the background as well. If the soil was to be used the flowers would have to be stuck into something more substantial to hold them up as the soil alone wasn't strong enough to hold them.
Sticking leaves into the soil so they stick up makes the flowers look more complete and 'natural'. This also fills the lower half of the composition more making the design look more balanced. Low lying flower heads on the soil help break up the use green within the leaves in this area.
