OUGD603 - Brief 5 - Live Brief - Conscious Creatives - Wildflower and Fungi Exhibition - Development - Bee and Butterfly Refinements

Bee and Butterfly Refinements

With the previous designs it was considered that their was potentially a clash of 2D elements and 3D despite both being made from paper, also the use of black and white for the butterflies and bees wasn't working as well as expected.

Instead it was considered that some model bees and butterflies could be bought as the 3D nature of these would fit more with the flowers as well as being more realistic.

After buying a pack of different insects online it was considered that they could be painted using brighter colours to match that of the paper. The original insects used a variety of different colours that were perhaps a little inconsistent.

A bee was painted using black acrylic paint first then yellow was applied over the top. However when the yellow was applied over the black the consistency of the colour application wasn't great and looked messy. Because of this the idea of painting the insects was discarded.

After thinking about the composition as a whole it was thought that the design wouldn't need anymore than two butterflies and two bees within the design otherwise it would become cluttered. With this in mind using just two bees in their original painted form wouldn't be overpowering within the design.

The butterflies that were bought were made from a combination of paper / plastic wings and a plastic body. The patterns on the butterflies it was thought could potentially clash in style with the rest of the design, however maybe using just the pink and blue ones would create a link in colour with the rest of the design.

It was found that the plastic bodies of the butterflies could be unclipped to remove the wings, with this in mind it was thought the wings could be replaced with some of the papers used in the rest of the design. This would make them more inkeeping with the rest of the design.

Using the same outline as the original butterflies these shapes were lasercut from pink, yellow and blue papers.

Gluing two wing designs together so the the burn marks on the underside of the paper were hidden meant that the butterfly would be able to be seen from both sides. The bodies form the original design were then clipped back into place to recreate the original butterfly form.

It was suggested that only using the pink and yellow butterflies would be most appropriate as none of the darker blue had been used in the rest of the design. Using just the pink and yellow was more in keeping with the rest of the composition.
