Creating the composition
When arranging the different elements for the final composition the flower stems were cut at different heights to reflect the differing heights the flowers would be in real life. This also balanced elements within the composition.
The flowers stems were bent slightly at the bottom so that they could be stuck into the foam soil. This was strong enough to hold them in place as long as the design wasn't knocked or moved. Because the stems were made from wire this meant that they could be bent and moved, to position the flower heads and insects within the space.
By making cuts into the soil the leaves could then be slotted into place. Some of the more delicate leaves bent over and covered the soil whilst more substantial leaves held themselves up. This created a nice layering of elements within this area. By bending some of the leaves in half this also created a three dimensionality to the leaves rather than just having them all as flat elements. Adding some low lying flowers to the soil helped to add a bit of colour to what would otherwise have been quite a green area.
To attach the butterflies and bees to the wire superglue was used as a strong bond was needed for them to stay attached to the wire. These were positioned so that they looked like they were flying between flowers. Using only two of each was not too much within the design, allowed the elements to be balanced and meant the flowers were still the focal point of the composition.
