Production of Different Elements

Vinyl Logo Stickers

The large logo vinyl stickers would be placed on walls across the seminar room and third year room with one being large, which would be placed next to the screen and the rest being slightly smaller in size so that they could be applied to the podium and smaller wall space in the third year room. To make the designs suitable for the vinyl cutter the logo had to be outlined and scaled to the correct size. The logos couldn't be scaled to anything larger than 58cm as this was the full width of the vinyl cutter however the design could be as long as needed. All the designs were arranged to fit within this space to leave as little excess between logos as possible, to make the most of the blue vinyl we had. After the design was cut within the vinyl cutter the designs were cut down to size and the excess vinyl around the design had to be picked off. During the cutting process it was found that some of the letters had cut lines through them and the a was missing a bit making the letter look odd. These were recut and applied back onto the backing paper using a pencil to mark the outline of the previous letter then manually positioning the other letters over the top of it. A plastic was then applied over the top and a squeegee used to rub all of the air bubbles out. Applying the plastic over the top would make it easier to apply the whole design to the wall.

Vinyl Schedule

A similar process was used to create the vinyl schedule. The design was no wider than 58cm but we wanted the design to go alongside the door so I made the design 140cm long. We discussed that having the length of the schedule set off the floor would allow people to read the design more easily. Unpicking this design was far more time consuming than the logo stickers because of the text within the design. The process was slow because text would come up with the excess when pulling it away from the backing paper so a scalpel had to be used to hold letters down whilst the rest was taken up. The scalpel was also useful for taking out the counters within letters. Applying the plastic over the top of this design was definitely a two person job because of the length of the design.

Applying the Vinyl Logos

The large vinyl design was applied to the wall next to where the projected screen would be. It was set slightly off the line of the screen so there was no overlap with the presentations being projected and the logo. This logo would be the focal point of the seminar room. A smaller logo was placed on the podium where the speakers would stand and another was placed on the far wall of the room so that their was an even spread of logos throughout the room. This meant that if any photographs were taken then the creative convos logo would be seen within the photographs. Workshops would take place within the third year room so two smaller logos were placed on two different walls within the space where there was room. A vinyl logo was also placed on the wall just outside the third year room so people would know which room workshops would be held in and to make the event noticeable to people passing. The logos were applied so that they used either the line of a wall or podium as a way of aligning the logo so that they looked square in context.

Applying the Vinyl Schedule

The vinyl schedule was more difficult to put up because of the size of the design. To make sure the design was aligned with the door 10 cm was measured from the frame of the door outwards up the length on the door frame so the line was a consistent width away from the door frame all the way down. The schedule would be positioned so it was square with the top of the door frame so the height of the door frame was measured then this length was repeated with the tape measure and marked along the wall so the design would be aligned with the door frame. Magic tape was used to join all of the points to create a right angle at running along the top and side of the door frame. This would allow the schedule to be more easily positioned. Applying the design was quite fiddly. Taking the backing paper off the vinyl was a three person job as one person had to hold the backing sheet, another pull the clear sheet and vinyl up whilst the other person had to check all the letters were being pulled up. Similarly applying the design needed three people initially with one holding the design in place from the top, another aligning it from the bottom and another pressing it onto the wall. Once squared off and applied to the wall I could then pull the clear sheet away from the wall and use the squeegee to rub the design down. This took time as lots of the letters kept coming away from the wall so had to be rubbed down to get them to stick. A late change to the Wednesday meant another bit of vinyl had to be cut with the updated information which was then reapplied to replace the previous information.

Door Postcards

Next to each door within graphics there are name plates where postcard sized designs can be placed within them. For these designs the creative convos logo was used with a half toned blue background, to create consistency between this and the poster designs. These were printed on matt paper to allow the cyan blue colour to be really bright.

Name Badge Stickers

The speech bubble stickers were printed on matt sticker paper as this allowed the blue of the design to stand out, whilst also having a white background and slight texture for people to be able to write their names on the stickers. If these had been printed on gloss sticker paper, although the finish would have been nice, they wouldn't have been practical to write on.

Water Bottle Stickers

The water bottle stickers were a smaller version of the door postcards however these were printed at a smaller scale so that they could replace the labels on a bought waterbottle. Originally these designs were going to be printed on clear sticker paper, however their were concerns that perhaps the colours weren't going to be as vibrant as the colour in the rest of the designs. It was suggested by the print technician that frosted sticker paper could be used. This was more opaque than the clear sticker paper which allowed the colours of the design to stand out more, whilst still having a whitish background.
