OUGD603 - Brief 8 - Scrap Paper Notebook / Journal - Production

Production

To create the book scraps and offcuts of paper were sourced from different studios. From these natural coloured papers were used so that their was a level of consistency within the notebook as it was considered having brightly coloured papers alongside these might clash.  Some of the larger pieces of scrap were cut down to A5 so that these could be printed onto whilst the rest of the scraps were cut into square / rectangular shapes.

The different line layouts were printed onto the A5 sheets of paper with some being double sided and others using the lines only on one side.

The A5 pages were then collated with these ordered so that no two of the same paper were next to each other. These were clipped to keep them in place which allowed the other smaller scraps to then be slotted inbetween the lined pages.

When doing this a certain proportion of the paper had to reach the spine for the pages to join when perfect bound. One piece of paper was used between each of the lined pages with these varying in sizes and material as well as their positioning.

Cutting the spine on the electric guillotine allowed for a precise cut. This created an edge for the spine to the be glued in the perfect binding machine.

The cover design was printed onto thick white card and the flap for the cover was created out of florescent green card which was cut down to size.

The white cover was put through the perfect binding machine with the text block so that it glued the cover to the book. To allow the second piece of card for the flap to be attached to the cover and still act as a flap this was added to the book and put through the perfect binding machine again so that it glued this to the spine.

The rest of the sides were cut down using the electric guillotine to create the final notebook.
