OUGD504 - Mini Group Crit

Discussions on concepts

It was suggested that as a way of combining tradition with the modern then perhaps illustrations of traditional things could be put over the top of the images. It was also said that perhaps text could be overlaid over the images, like the Arabic word for the places within the book. This could be created using a similar varnish to the designs in 'A Decade in Dubai' so that they are subtle. As a binding method it was suggested that it was worth looking to see if there were any traditional Arabic binding methods. Writing both Arabic and English translations of the content would provide a link to the heritage of the country as well as mimicking how many of the signs within Dubai are written. It was suggested that a contrast between small and large images could create a sense of extremes within the book and that the combination of glossy and textured papers would be a good way of reflecting the contrasting landscapes within Dubai. Developing a hierarchy of information e.g. text always at the top with negative space underneath, would provide the design with further structure.
