Pagination and things that need changing
It had been suggested that perhaps a Concertina format would be better suited to the content of the book and would allow the two lines to run parallel to one another. However it has been decided to stick with the book format as the concertina I feel would become too messy and lack the structure for placing elements, so the book with the split journeys was chosen.
Thoughts on what is working and adjustments for different aspects:
- Having the two lines at different scales created unbalance between the thickness of the two lines making them look differently visually, so it was decided that the lines would have to be scaled proportionally
- One concern for the beach line was that there were only four places along the line meaning that there would be a lot of blank pages in relation to the road line. To fill this it was suggested that the blank pages could be filled with the extra images from the beach scenery. Although there are places along the beach to visit, the beach is an area / length of space rather than an actual location so using imagery to show the stretch of beach would work well. This would fill the gaps as well as create a journey along the beach.
- To allow enough space for the road activities (approx 15 activities) the road line was scaled first to find out how many pages would be need for all the content. This scale would then be used for the beach line so they are both in proportion too one another.
- The book format ideally is going to be a similar size to the Eyewitness Guides for practical reasons. However when the lines were scaled up to fit across the amount of pages needed for the road content (approx 15 activities) it was considered that perhaps the page size may have to be increased slightly to provide enough space for the line (when scaled across the right amount of pages it took up more room on the page than anticipated) and content.
- At the moment the road line is too bold in comparison to the beach line which is thin and elegant. The road line was drawn around exactly as it was on the map then filled in to create a line rather than a shape. However because the road is thicker this has led to the line becoming too dominant and standing out too much. The road need to be refined further and made to have more Arabic influences rather than just following its exact shape geographically.
- Some of textures created from the rubbings could be used as background textures within the book
