Focus on the textures of the raw materials
This idea would focus on the physicality of the raw materials available on the site.
Using some of the shapes created from ripping and tearing paper, these were then used to clip images to create a more textured feel to the images. Rough experimentation with the different shaped images on a variety of textures allowed for a better sense as to how they would react on a textured background.
When using light coloured textured backgrounds it was found that light colours would not be very defined, whereas dark colours look too intense in contrast.
Using the textured shapes for the images create a sense of quirk and uniqueness. Placing the images with the text directly on the background allows the images to better reflect scraps however creates a jarring effect becasue of the combination of the two textures.
Adding a light coloured box around the listings seperates them as individual listing's however does not create enough contrast to distinguish them from the background. The boxes however do create a more regular frame for the inconsistent shapes to fit within.
Using different textures on the background to represent the main material categories could be more difficult than anticipated as some are darker and more 'textured' surfaces may not works as well with the same colour scheme combination e.g. a darker category bar will not stand out on a dark background.
Using textures for the different elements on a white background prevents conflicting materials and allows for more contrast within the design. Using mainly monochrome textures for the elements will allow the coloured images of the listings to stand out. The shapes that have a horizontal torn edge are more effective because they allow enough space to place the text easily.
Overall, the use of textured imagery and listings is too busy and creates too little contrast within the design, which does not allow the products to stand out. Having a plain background creates more contrast however the mix between coloured and black and white imagery feels like two different styles. Also the use of the rough shapes although in a structured format still look quite amateur / childish which may not appeal to creatives.
