OUGD603 - Brief 1 - Souvenir Penny Designs - Primary Research - Images from the Gallery

Images from Leeds Art Gallery

- The stairs and entrance to Leeds Art Gallery are the first thing visitors to the gallery will see, making it the face of Leeds Art Gallery. The distinctive architecture is reflected in the rest of the building.

- A statue by Henry Moore sits outside the gallery showing his links to both Yorkshire / Leeds and Leeds Art Gallery and Henry Moore institute next door.

- The signage outside the building has an interesting zig zag form, which information is spread across. The typeface from the branding is used across these designs and the text is set read vertically from top to bottom.

- Outside the museum there are large scale chess sets where the people of all ages have games together.

Ziff Gallery

- The paintings within the gallery are all classical in style
- The walls are full from top to bottom with paintings with the walls a deep red
- The varying sizes of the paintings mean that they are arranged in a patchwork that fills all the wall space
- All the paintings have very different frame styles

- The ceiling has a large glass roof which has an interesting shape / structure

- In the middle of the gallery there are various busts

- Within the gallery there are pillars with leaf motifs which decorate sections of the pillars.

- A large scale sculpture using blocks of stone to create a circle is visually striking within the gallery

- The Boyle Family's cast of a section of ground is intriguing because of its three dimensionality and tactility.

Central Court

- This gallery is very open, housing one large piece of work
- The gallery is impressive in terms of its architecture, with a ceiling that is curved with glass panels. There is also the outline of a doorway at the end of the gallery.

South Gallery

- Within  the South Gallery there is a range of contemporary installations and paintings which use a range of materials and processes.
- The gallery has a large glass roof and a balcony on the outside of the building.

West Gallery

- The West Gallery holds a combination of contemporary installation pieces and paintings.

- The paintings within the gallery are a mixture of styles, time periods and sizes.

Victorian Stairs

- Lothar Gotz's geometric artwork is striking on the Victorian Staircase and is a new artwork for the reopening of the gallery.

- The stairs going up to the gallery have different business names on them, perhaps showing sponsors of Leeds Art Gallery?

Tiled Hall Cafe

- The Cafe walls and ceiling are covered in varying shaped and coloured tiles creating a luxurious setting.

- Square tiles are used on the wall and use floral / leaf motifs within them. They are arranged in the repeat pattern and are a blue / green colour.

- The tiles on the ceiling in the Tiled Hall Cafe are hexagonal in shape, whilst the different coloured tiles are arranged to also create a hexagonal pattern.

- In the entrance to the Tiled Hall Cafe there is a large mat on the floor which has the name of the Cafe on it.
